1. DOWNLOADING FILES FROM THIS SITE

Downloading files from this site should be very similar to downloading files from any other site. However, after clicking on the link for a file download, you will be taken to a tripod page containing another link - clicking on this link will then start your download. You should select "SAVE THIS FILE TO DISK", (as opposed to "Open this file from its current location"). And then, when the file is downloaded, open / install it from your hard-drive. Most downloaded files are zipped (.ZIP) files, explained below.

If you are using a download manager such as 'Gozilla' or 'Get Right', it is possible, but unlikely, that the tripod downloads will not work. If you cannot successfully download the files with these managers turned on, then try turning them off.

If, after this you still cannot download the files, it is probably because Tripod is being used heavily or there are server problems. Please come back and try again in a few hours, or the next day. If, after a day has gone by and the download still doesn't work, please email me and I can see if there is anything wrong.

2. WHAT ARE ZIP / TAR.GZ FILES?

Zip files are simply files that contain other files. They are effectively a briefcase which can hold many regular files, and can usually make them smaller (and hence faster) to download across the internet. If you have downloaded a zip file, you will need a program such as winzip (http://www.winzip.com - shareware), to unpack them back to being regular, usable files on your hard-drive.

Tar.Gz (Tarred and GZipped) files are similar packages but are usually used by people using Linux instead of windows. You should only find yourself downloading tar.gz files if you are using Linux, and if you are using this operating system, you should already understand how to unpack these files (tar -xvzf FILENAME).

3. INSTALLING THE FONTS

It is incredibly easy to install new fonts in windows. Nearly all fonts made for windows are TTF fonts, and each font is simply a FONTNAME.TTF file. Simply download these files, and unzip them if necessary, then copy these files into your Windows Font Directory - which should be C:\WINDOWS\FONTS. From now onwards, the fonts will show in all programs that load. You may need to restart an already open program to get the fonts to show.

While installing fonts is easy, using a Tengwar font may not be quite so easy. As our keyboards are not Tengwar keyboards, the authors of the fonts will have had to link specific symbols with specific keys, or they may have used special methods to allow you to 'implant' these characters into your document. You should usually be able to find out which keyboard character each letter is linked to by running "Character Map" if you have it installed ( It comes with Windows ). If this is installed, it can usually be found on the start menu at PROGRAMS->ACCESSORIES->SYSTEM TOOLS->CHARACTER MAP. Luckily, most fonts are accompanied by a README or a HELP.TXT file which will give you instructions on using the font(s).

I'm afraid that I cannot provide instructions on how to install the fonts for LaTeX, as when I installed the fonts into MikTex it took me over an hour to get it working properly, and I wouldn't like to try this again just yet! If someone could email me instructions for installing LaTeX fonts, I would be very grateful.
